3 Simple Golf Questions for Beginners to Ask
There must be some reason why some golfers outperform others. If two equally skilled golfers play each other why does one win and the other lose?
What is the strategy that will help someone to win?
One of the main reasons causing the difference is attitude of mind. You must go out with the desire to win and the confidence in yourself that you can. To do this you will need to be in good physical shape, have studied the game of golf and practiced.
If you are starting to play golf after leading a primarily sedentary lifestyle then you are going to notice that it is going to be rather difficult for you to just run out and play an entire 18 hole round of golf so overall your golf game will be greatly determined by your level of physical fitness. If you are in great shape physically, in terms of flexibility, strength and endurance you will be able to play a much better game than someone who is in lesser physical shape.
So how can I get fit for golf is the first question and this is important because golf fitness is not necessarily the same as fitness in general. You have to exercise the correct muscles so that you can for instance swing your club correctly and fully. If the muscles for this are not supple and strong you will have a weak swing which as we know will not result in good clean hits with the power to get a good length too. These excercises should not take up a lot of time in your week but should be done regularly to get results.
A bit of carefully planned and executed exercise can go a very long way towards helping you improve your golf game dramatically. You will need to improve your physical fitness levels and you will be rather amazed at the benefits that it provides to your health as well as your overall golf swing.
The next question you should ask yourself is – how can studying the game of golf help me?
Knowing the basic rules of golf, the terms used and their meaning, the etiqette of the golf course and the appropriate club to choose for your shot will all help in instilling that confidence needed. You may not be very good yet but if you know more than other beginners you have an immediate advantage by at least knowing what other golfers are talking about.
There are numerous golf terms that are used in almost every game that is played, yet often it is virtually impossible for someone who is new to golf or just does not understand golf to understand the terminology. Do you know what is meant by tee, fairway, green, bunker, swing, stance etc., etc.?
A rulebook is also very important. Golf has some of the strangest rules and there is no way to know all of them; but carrying a copy of the rule book with you means that you can always find the rule that matches your particular problem at the time and not lose points by technical errors. In fact, you will learn most of the rules as you get into the situations that require a remedy.
One of the most important golfing tips for beginners I can give is to learn golf etiquette. Nothing will make you an outcast at your golf club faster than being tagged as a rude golfer.
Your final question may be – do I need to practice and if so how?
Any new game you take up will need practice so before you actually venture out to play a round of golf, practice. If you can afford it get a few lessons from a Pro so that you understand the basics of the swing and the putt and then you can practice the correct moves.
Make sure you can at least hit a few balls with a few different clubs before trying an actual game. This will make your first round a little less stressful. Don’t expect perfect results immediately so don’t aim too high.
You are not going to go out and shoot par on your first round. In fact you will be lucky if you ever reach that stage, so learn the game for the enjoyment and challenges that it offers.
Come to the game with a gameplan. Have a basic idea of what shots you want to hit – both where and when you want to hit them. Know your opponents strengths and weaknesses – and have a plan in place for the specific player you are facing. This will improve your confidence immensely and therefore give you that advantage that you seek. Most of the the points raised in these three questions can be answered by finding a good report or ebook on the particular topic. These cannot help you with your actual game on the course but they are a good starting point and well worth the time to read so that you go out mentally armed for the fray.
So the conclusion is that if you want to be one of the ones that win you must take it upon yourself to do something about it. No messing!
No game can be played immediately without understanding the basics particularly golf, but if you are willing to make the effort you will be well rewarded.
Nothing is better than being on a golf course on a lovely day and often in a beautiful situation, with the sun on your back and the wind in your hair, knowing that your game is the best it can be for your particular standard and that you can beat your companions because you have made that effort. Good Luck. Norm.
